The FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament is the last chance these athletes have to advance to the 2008 Olympics. Twelve basketball teams will gather in four groups in the tournament which will be held in Athens. Only three of them will join the nine teams which have already secured their place in Beijing. There are five favourites who will most likely fight to the end for the three spots remaining: Slovenia, Croatia, the 2005 European champions Greece, top NBA star Dirk Nowitzki’s Germany and 2005 Americas champions Brazil.
