European basketball received unprecedented media attention this off-season because of a movement where talented NBA players defected overseas for more money. The 2008/09 Euroleague season will see more familiar faces scattered into countries like Italy, Greece, Russia and Israel. There is no doubt this brings more excitement and international attention to basketball in Europe. The season, which features 24 teams from 13 different countries, will culminate with the Euroleague Final Four at the new O2 World arena in Berlin, Germany. Defending champion CSKA Moscow will have a tougher time reaching their fourth straight finals appearance (champions in 2005/06 & 2007/08).
The new season will be under new format with four groups instead of the old three group set-up.
