Rafa Benitez's side face a difficult task against the second best team in La Liga according to the final table of 2007/8. Villareal returned to the Champions League after finishing second behind Real Madrid last season and they have an abundance of class players including Robert Pires and Marcos Senna. Liverpool's pre-season has been dominated with transfer rumours surrounding the futures of Gareth Barry and Robbie Keane. Their last game was against Hertha Berlin in front of over 50,000 fans who had to settle for watching a fairly dull 0-0 draw. Andriy Voronin missed a second-half penalty to win the game but Liverpool's players appear to be progessing in terms of fitness and sharpness for the new season.
