Traditionally intended to favor professional golfers over high profile wealthy amateurs, it is still the only major closed to leading amateurs and guarantees top notch sharp hitting pro-level competition. Winners are afforded a five year exemption to all majors and a lifetime exemption from the PGA Championship. Tiger Woods will miss out on his chance for a record hat trick this year due to a knee injury that ended his 2008 season.
