Since its opening event in 1970 the Legg Mason Tennis Classic has become an important warm up event for the US Open and is part of the US open series of hardcourt events. This hugely popular event takes place in Washington DC and has been won by an American eight times out of the last twelve. Last year saw experienced campaigner Arnuad Clement defeat upcoming Scot Andy Murray.
